Changing My Life
My decision in running for student government is one of the most important decisions I have made in my life. I couldn’t have asked for a more positive experience. I have learned more by being a student body officer, than I think I have learned in all my years of schooling combined. It is not academics that I have learned, but leadership skills and interaction with the students and adults around me.
In Student Government, we are able to take a trip to a leadership conference down at Dixie College in St. George for about four days. At this time, my life was already being changed. I had the opportunity to take classes on different ways to be a good leader. I was able to take so much out of that and apply it in being an Alta SBO. I was able to meet the classiest among classy student leaders around the state of Utah. All of the students down there were great people! All outgoing, smart, fun, optimistic, and had great goals for their school and for their own lives. I learned that’s the kind of people I want to surround myself with, because being around them, made me want to be more and more like that also.
After Dixie, just the nine Student Body Officers and Mr. Packer, were able to take a trip to Yellowstone and stay in a cabin for about four days also. I then learned that I was going to have nine life long friends. Taylor, Nick, Colin, Michael, Jeff, Sam, Russell, Parker, and Mr. Packer, were now my greatest and best friends. All of these men have personalities and qualities that I cling on to! They are changing my life by helping me grow, sharing their great characteristics, and teaching me patience. I haven’t grown to love a group of boys more than these before.
Up in Yellowstone, I learned that a lot of hard work goes into planning things. I had never realized that the little details are so crucial. I was able to become skilled at planning large events. Also, we were able to improve our delegation skills. Splitting up into groups became our favorite way of getting things accomplished. Something I will use the rest of my life.
Student Government has brought about so many great opportunities that will change my life. It has given me the opportunity to get to know the administration on a higher level. This has also opened up doors in having them help me with college choices and scholarships. Without Student Government I wouldn’t have been able to get on such a personal level with these people and learn so much from them. Also, I have become so much more of an outgoing person, on a level that I didn’t know I could reach. As soon as I was elected, I felt the responsibility to get to know the student body better, and become more personal with people. Before, going up and talking to someone I didn’t know wasn’t easy. Now I am so much more comfortable and I believe I will carry that new quality with me throughout my life. I know that it will help me be more successful. From that I was able to be confident in choosing the direction I want to go with my life. I now want to go into communication and become even better at working with and around people.
Being on Student Government is so fun and has benefitted me in many positive ways. I have learned great responsibility, and have grown to love watching things come together. I have made life long friends and learned life long lessons. I have had many windows of opportunity come into my life that it is one of the biggest blessings I could have asked for.
